Product Description
By combining a regular coffeemaker and espresso machine, this appliance makes it possible to satisfy every coffee craving with a single, compact unit. The espresso machine includes a steam nozzle with a frothing attachment for making coffee drinks like cappuccino and café latté. Make espresso the traditional way: tamp the proper amount of coffee into a filter basket inside a filter holder, twist the filter holder onto the machine, pour cold water into the machine's boiler, and flick the "espresso" switch. Brew up to 8 ounces of espresso into a glass carafe or directly into one or two espresso cups, (a two-cup adapter is included).
Making regular coffee is just as easy: insert a paper filter into the swing-out filter basket, spoon in the desired amount of coffee, pour cold water into the coffeemaker's water chamber (separate from the espresso boiler), and flick the "coffee" switch. Brew up to eight 5- ounce cups of coffee in the 40-ounce, glass coffee carafe, which sits on a warming plate next to the espresso carafe. Removing the carafe from the warming plate pauses the brewing process for a midbrew pour. The appliance has a plastic exterior, measures 14 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 10 inches deep, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

Summary: Good, durable, flexible 2010-08-12
Comment: I've had this device for 14 years. I've repaired a couple small things, like the mechanism to allow the coffeepot to be removed during the drip process without spilling coffee onto the hotplate, and running a decalcification solution through the espresso side. But otherwise both coffee and espresso functions continue to work flawlessly.
My only complaints are that the espresso carafe is basically unnecessary, it doesn't make quite as much espresso as one might like, and that the plastic isn't labelled as being BPA-free (though this is an older model before "plastic consciousness").
I've now moved to a french press (Bodum) for coffee so that I'm not running hot water through plastic, but I could also use the espresso function as the water and cofee only touch steel.

Summary: 8 years old and still going 2010-07-27
Comment: I have had this coffee/espresso maker for 8 years and it is still making great coffee. It only spills if I try to pour the coffee out to fast otherwise it doesn't. The espresso maker is easy to use and makes a great latte. When it finally breaks I am going to get another.

Summary: Reliable but nothing special. 2010-06-22
Comment: I got several years of good use out of the used Caffe Duomo I bought, but I don't think I would pay full price or buy one again.
Pros:
Makes a decent cup of coffee.
Looks pretty decent on the counter.
Compact espresso / coffee maker.
Cons:
Carafe always spills - always. The spout is just poorly designed no matter what you are pouring. I got in the habit of always setting my mug on a paper towel before filling it.
The expresso side traps spilled water when you fill the coffee maker and needs to be dried out / soaked up every day or it gets nasty.
Mediocre build quality - the filter basket doesn't fit flush and the lid is held on by little plastic pegs that break off easily.
The heat plate didn't do a good job holding temperature.
Switches are very easy to hit accidentally and the LEDs aren't very bright...more than once I've come home to find that the coffee maker was bumped on and heating all day. If the hot plate heated up properly, it would have been a real fire hazard. Get in the habit of unplugging it when you aren't around.

Summary: Pass on this one 2009-11-10
Comment: I fell in love with Krups when I married my bride back in '92. Asked for 3 things one of which was Il Caffe Duomo. This earlier model, which I still nurse today, is excellent. So when I decided to replace the coffee maker here at the office I of course bought another. Unfortunately it was the 985. The expresso component works just fine. The coffe component was changed as was the plastic with which the machine shell and filter basket are made of. This model is susceptible to floating grinds that block up the hole thru which the coffee drips and causing mass spillage over the top if not paid attention to. The latch that holds the basket in place, a tab that is part of the body mold will eventually start to bend and will not line up with the basket. Alot of random frustration from what was for me a $100 coffee maker. I just went thru my umpteenth spillage this morning over the last 2 1/2 years and I'm just tired of it. I would not recommend this coffee maker unless it was on deep discount.

Summary: I LOVE my Krups!! 2009-05-30
Comment: Thank you for reading my review! I bought my Krups over a couple years ago at a YARD SALE for FIVE BUCKS! What a PICK! Of course being from a yard sale I had to find manuals and sorts to figure it out, and after trial and error on Espresso and getting the parts list I figured out there were a couple critical parts missing, AKA the steam plug and espresso pot and such. I got all the needed items from Krups right away and WALLA, I became a Krups expert and just LOVE my investment into making this machine a winner in our house!! WE LOVE IT THANKS ROBERT I USE IT EVERYDAY for coffee and cappuccino on the weekends the BEST! Probably will never get a better yard sale deal ever!
