Summary: Black & Decker CMD3500MBT 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe 2008-11-19
Comment: We like the coffee pot very much. The wife especially likes the fact the pot is not heated by the plate keeping the coffee flavor better and longer.
We would recommend the maker to our friends.

Summary: If you like cleaning up wet messes, buy this coffee maker 2008-11-17
Comment: This coffee maker makes a good cup of coffee and if all you want is a good cup of coffee then this might be the machine for you. Unfortunately, half the time you will be mopping that coffee off of your counter tops or worse yet, your floor.
I bought this machine in June and had such high hopes for it. The design is nice and programming is a snap and oh you just have to love that thermal carafe. I was able to overlook the fact that when pouring there was a slow but steady drip coming from the joint where the stainless meets the plastic. I reasoned with myself that this was a small price to pay for a good cup of coffee. I kept a towel over the pot when pouring. A small inconvenience I told myself. By the end of July I was a commited Black and Decker coffee drinker and called the company to order a two year supply of the silly filter system.
Have I mentioned the silly filter system? The filters are near impossible to find, even when going to Black and Decker's own website. Again, I told myself this was simply another small inconvenience on the road to good coffee. Besides, I am sure some happy black and decker owner will counter my review here by providing copious links to the filters and their holster.
It was about three months into my relationship with this coffee maker that I awoke one morning to the wonderful smell of fresh perked coffee that I'd grown accustomed to. My taste buds were poised at the ready for that first heavenly sip as I entered the kitchen to find fresh brewed coffee had taken over the countertops and the floor. Snapped from my reverie, I had to admit that perhaps something was wrong. Still I tried to be cheerful as I mopped up the brew and made a fresh pot without incident.
All was good again for about 2 weeks until the same coffee flood occured again. I spoke with other drip coffee maker friends and got the same advice all around... DON'T USE PAPER FILTERS. I was relieved to hear there was a solution to my problem. I invested in a gold filter basket and brewed coffee without incident for about a month. But my joy was short lived.
By the end of September, coffee floods became a routine occurance around here. I begged and pleaded with my silly little machine to come to its senses and just brew coffee, but it was useless. No amount of cleaning, begging, cajoling, handholding or pot watching was able to make this system work for more than a day without flooding. The balloon of my denial was finally punctured and I had to admit that this just is NOT a good coffee maker. Sadly, I retired it in early october and purchased a Keurig Machine instead.
Sorry Black and Decker... I normally sing your praises but not in this case.

Summary: Like it a lot--just a few tiny bugs 2008-11-13
Comment: Overall, a fine coffeemaker. I love the thermal carafe (although this one is small--the model with the larger carafe got poor reviews) and the lack of a hot plate: brew your coffee ahead of time and no worrying about an appliance being left on (turns off automatically) or bad-tasting coffee. I do wonder why the clock is on top, and doesn't remain lit--you won't use this as your kitchen clock; it's only use is for preprogramming a brew time. I also worry about possible future repairs to the latch which opens the filter basket (latch is needed as the top of the unit slopes downward) and the bright blue lights (needed in the water reservoir 'cause you can't see a thing!): if they break or go out, who would fix them and at what cost? No, nothing is broken yet, I would just like this to last for years. Also, the lid on my water reservoir does not quite close all the way. After all that, and a few months of use, I would recommend this Black&Decker coffeemaker.

Summary: Happy at last with this B&D thermal carafe coffee maker 2008-10-16
Comment: I agree with other reviewers, coffee makers are so hard to research because everyone is so particular about his/her coffee and if you have a bad coffee maker experience, it's a really bad experience. I spent so much $$$ on a Capresso, then it went and broke my heart. This B&D has all of the same features, a few of the same drawbacks, and works much, much better at a third of the price. Amazon is so great about delivering quickly with the best (or at least a very competitive) price.
I'd say maybe the Capresso carafe is a bit tighter, but it spilled constantly. No doubt, some poor student is now coping with that model having picked it up from the thrift shop where I dumped it. With the instruction manual and extra filters.
You must be careful when threading the lid on the B&D, but the coffee-us interruptus feature really does work! Yay! What is most important to me about a coffee maker? Dependability. Will it give me a good cuppa every morning, no spill, no babying it along? Yes. My feeling is that an eight-cup is as big as you want to go for the thermal carafe. Good luck!

Summary: Leaking carafe 2008-09-26
Comment: I got this B&D coffee maker today. It leaks coffee all over the counter when it is being poured. The lid on the carafe fits nicely and is easy to use. The problem is that there is a small welding defect in the stainless steel lip of the carafe that allows coffee to get around the O ring like seal with the plastic top. This is a case of poor quality control. I will send it back.
Had it not been for the leak I would have given this machine four stars. With the blue LEDs it looks really cool. The coffee in the pot was a reasonable 152 degrees F. without preheating the carafe. The coffee tasted good. It has a large door for filling with water and was very easy to fill. With a brush or "sponge on a stick" device the carafe is easy to clean. The digital display is outstanding. The carafe nests securely during the brewing cycle so spillage is unlikely. The carafe holds about 35 oz of liquid when full. For the features the price seemed good. I did not test the brew strength control.
Update: B&D sent me a replacement carafe at no charge. The new carafe does not leak unless you pour too quickly. Getting the last half a cup can get messy. The base of the unit does make a disconcerting snapping sound like an electrical arc while brewing. With a preheated carafe the coffee started at about 160 degrees. After ten hours the half full carafe of coffee was 119 degrees - warm with good flavor.
